Cincinnati Reds rock 1957 throwback unis
Long before the current throwback uniform craze, the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies were at the start of the craze in 1991.
Both teams wore double-knit versions of their 1957 wool jerseys for a Turn Back the Clock day on June 16, 1991 at Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium.
The Reds’ uniforms featured gray vests and trousers, with red undershirts and stripped sanitaries. The hats were white with a red wishbone c and bill.
One advantage of these earlier throwback uniforms over today’s craze was that the uniforms were form fitting instead of today’s retro unis that look more like pajamas.
The Phiilies wore their red pinstripe jerseys for the 1991 game, which the Reds won 8-6.
Major League Baseball’s first Turn Back the Clock game was hosted by the Chicago White Sox on July 11, 1990.
