The subject of the lead-off card in Fleer’s 1986 Future Hall of Famer set seemed like to be the biggest shoe-in of the bunch to wind-up in Cooperstown. Pete Rose had just became baseball’s all-time hit king months earlier.

I’m not seeking to debate Rose’s merits on whether or not he should eventually be enshrined in the hall of fame. In this case let’s talk about the cards.

With so many baseball legends in the twilight  of their careers, Fleer for the first-and-only time produced this six-card special set into its annual collection.

The remainder of the 1986 Fleer set of future hall of famers included Steve Carlton, former Red Tom Seaver, Rod Carew, Nolan Ryan and Reggie Jackson.

All the other members of the 1986 set were enshrined into the Baseball Hall of Fame during their first-year of eligability. The most recent inductee of the group was strike out king Nolan Ryan in 1999.

Hopefully he is not the last member of this group to be honored in Cooperstown.

I remember that set… sure brings back memories. I agree… hopefully Ryan isn’t the last member of this bunch.
