The pace of professional sports is very difficult to keep up with especially for trading card companies, which explains why Tony Perez was featured in three different 1977 Topps cards with two teams and one distinct material. His 1977 Topps offering featured him with the Cincinnati Reds despite being traded in the off season along with Will McEnaney to the Montreal Expos for Woodie Fryman and Dale Murray. However Topps’ Canadian-based distributor O-Pee-Chee was able to correctly represent The Big Doggie in its 1977 set.

The most unusual of the 1977 trio of cards is Perez’s appearance in the 1977 Topps Cloth Stickers set. One of the few Topps specialty sets of the 1970s, the 73 card set of cloth stickers featured 55 players and 18 puzzle cards which could be joined to form a photos of the American League and National League all-star teams.
